The Smithsonian Just Released a VR App of “Wonder,” and It’s Beautiful
From the most Instagrammed exhibit[1] in Smithsonian history comes its first virtual reality app and It. Is. Beautiful. The Renwick Gallery’s “Wonder” exhibit, which closed in July, has been re-opened for anyone who’s got a smart phone and Google Cardboard[2].
The app, which is free for Apple[3] and Android[4] devices, “represents a whole new way of sharing art with the public,” said Sara Snyder, the chief of the museum’s technology office, in a press release. So, if the line that stretched all the way to the White House deterred you from visiting, here’s a second chance at experiencing “Wonder[5].”
And, if you were feeling smug because the buzz surrounding “Wonder” finally convinced you to actually go to a museum instead of just talking about going, I’m sorry. Me too. The silver lining is that if museums keep making apps this compelling, we’ll never have to go again.
